Unbeknownst to many citizens of the city of Rochester, a war was being waged within the confines of Gordon Field House. A war against our fellow brothers in sport, a war against the clock, and perhaps most daunting, a war against oneself. This past Friday and Saturday, the Union College Track team tested their mettle at the NYSTC Indoor Track Championships hosted by R.I.T. With only the top individuals in each event having been extended an invitation, this was by far the most hotly contested meeting of the season. Hardened physically and mentally by an arduous season of competition, the Dutchmen arrived ready not only to endure, but to thrive as well.

Starting off the day on the men's side, Union's short sprint duo of Phil Lambert and Davis Barber fought gallantly in the 200 meter dash, finishing fifth and eighth with times of 23.02 and 23.16, respectively. Motivated by his stellar performance in his previous race, Captain Barber toed the line once again in 400, closing extremely well with an ECAC qualifying time of 50.39, which was good enough for fifth place in a hotly contested final. Despite a nagging ankle injury, Dearon Panossian led the first lap of a very physical 800 meters, holding on to stop the clock at 2:00 for a sixth place finish. In perhaps his strongest event, Phil Lambert accelerated well from the starting blocks in the 55 meter hurdles, clearing the barriers well enough for second place over all. With a time of 8.00, Lambert recorded an ECAC qualifying mark.

Proving to be indefatigable, Lambert teamed with Davis Barber, Ryan Owen and Kyle Bucklin overcame a bad lane assignment with an ECAC qualifying performance in the 4 x 200 with a time of 1:32 for fourth place overall. With such a deadly combination of long spring talent, Barber, Bucklin and Lambert once again took the baton in the 4 x 400, this time adding Ethan Loew to the roster. With strong legs recorded by each man, the anchor leg stopped the clock with a time of 3:29. In the lofty shadow of a Meet Record recording by the Dutchmen over twenty years ago, the 4 x 800 team of Brian Solinsky, Connor Gagliardi, Dearon Panossian and Gabe Sturges ran to an eighth place finish, fighting off a strong surge by a strong Nazareth team.
