Men's Swimming and Diving team comes in second at UNYSCSA Championships

The Union College Men's Swimming and Diving team competed this past weekend at the UNYSCSA Championships and finished in second place. The Dutchmen finished just eleven points behind Stevens Institute of Technology. Several members earned National 'B' cut qualifying times; although, it does not guarantee them spots at Nationals they are under consideration.

The men got the meet started with a third place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. This relay consisted of Kevin Jung, Steven Schapp, Michael Mooney and Todd Herman finishing with a time of 1:25.05, less than a half second behind Alfred University. Schapp continued his meet with a win by one one-hundredth of a second in the 500 freestyle. The Dutchmen had four swimmers finish in the top eleven of the conference. Sophomores Alex Boyd and Billy Breitweiser finished fourth and seventh, respectively, while freshmen David Sorensen and Ben Weiner finished ninth and eleventh overall. Finishing off the first day of competition, the 400 medley relay consisting of Brian Scarlett, Boyd, Jung and Herman came from behind to finish in second place with an overall time of 3:29.50. At the end of the first day of competition, the Dutchmen were in the lead by four points.

The second day of the competition started off with an exciting finish in the 200 medley relay. The relay team consisting of Scarlett, Boyd, Jung and Schapp came from behind to win the race with a time of 1:34.45. Also, the 'B' relay team consisting of Michael Mooney, Conor Donahoe, Lucas Tiziani and Herman finished in first in the consolation finals. The Dutchmen had two swimmers in the top ten of the conference. Sorensen and freshman Rob Wagner finished sixth and ninth, respectively. Four more Dutchmen finished in the top ten in the 100 yard butterfly. Schapp, Jung, Tiziani and freshman Matt Wahl finished first, second, seventh and tenth, respectively. In the 100 yard breaststroke Boyd, Donahoe and freshman Ben Weiner finished first, ninth and tenth overall. Boyd's winning time of 58.49 earned him a National 'B' qualifying time. In the 100 yard backstroke, Scarlett and Mooney finished second and eighth, respectively. Scarlett's time of 51.84 earned him a National 'B' qualifying time. In the last relay of the second day of the competition, Schapp, Breitweiser, Wahl and Scarlett finished in third place in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:02.13. At the end of the second day of competition, the Dutchmen were in the lead by three points.

The final day of the competition started with Schapp and Wagner finishing in third and fifth, respectively, in the 1650 yard freestyle. Scarlett and Mooney finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the 200 yard backstroke. In the 200 yard butterfly, Tiziani and Wahl finished in third and ninth overall, respectively. Going into the last relay of the meet, the Dutchmen were ahead of Stevens Institute of Technology by three points. The 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Jung, Scarlett, Herman and Schapp were defeated by Stevens by three seconds. This ended the meet and gave Stevens Institute of Technology the championship by eleven points.

Highlighting the diving portion of the meet was Ian Drillinger's performance in the one and three meter competitions. Drillinger finished fourth on the one meter board and fifth in the three meter competition.

Also, Head Coach Scott Felix was named UNYSCSA Coach of the Year.
