Women's Hockey gets shutout by Princeton

Princeton's power play looked a lot better than 18%, as junior defender Sasha Shelly quarterbacked the umbrella to perfection pinging passes around in the Union zone, giving the penalty killers a headache. Thirty seconds into the advantage, a tipped Shelly shot from the point almost found its way into the net, but Marcinko miraculously kept it out.
Half a minute later it was Shelly again this time passing the puck to Danielle DiCesare on the boards, who gave to it Corey Stearns standing just above the corner of the crease. Stearns picked out Melanie Wallace who put the puck past a sprawling Marcinko. Princeton's puck movement on the power play was fast and to the point.
Princeton cranked up the pressure after they scored their first goal. Creating a chance freshman forward Kelly Cooke whose backhand was denied point blank by Marcinko.
With just under two minutes Union conceded another tripping penalty, a call that could only be described as dubious. Princeton's power looked to pick up right where it left off last time, working the puck around the Dutchwomen penalty killers who were chasing shadows at this point. Marcinko had to stand on her head to prevent Princeton from doubling their lead before the first interval.
Princeton came out on the front foot in the second period. Their power play that carried over from the first period was in full swing, and Union was lucky to still be down by only one goal.
After the Princeton power play Union was able to sustain some pressure of their own. They cycled the puck around well in the visitors zone before, Princeton was able to get the puck deep in the Union zone and were awarded yet another penalty that too, could be described as fortuitous for the visitors. It seemed as if the refs were calling everything against the home side.
Princeton went back on the power play with 16 minutes left in the second period. It was Shelley who again was the catalyst, creating a move that looked strikingly similar to the first goal. She did extremely well to pick out Wallace on the boards just above the circle who turned into the provider, passing to a wide open Stearns who snipped a shot top glove side from just under the opposite circle.
