Swimming & Diving wins emotional final home meet

Union Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams defeated Hamilton College in their last home competition at the Alumni Gym pool. Senior captains Todd Herman, Steven Schapp, Meredith Nearpass, Maria Prendergast, and Sara Yergeau led the Dutchmen to an emotional 139-92 win on the men's side and a 127-115 win on the women's side.
The men set the tone of the meet with a close win in the 200 yard medley relay. This relay, consisting of Michael Mooney, Alex Boyd, Lucas Tiziani, and Kevin Jung finished with a time of 1:39:89. Schapp led the distance freestylers with an impressive win in the 1650 yard freestyle. Rob Wagner finished second in the race. Junior Brian Scarlett delivered an emotional win in the 200 yard freestyle to highlight one of his three first place finishes on the day. Jung and Tiziani continued their impressive meet with a first and second finish, respectively, in the 100 yard butterfly finishing within a hundredth of each other. The Dutchmen backstrokers consisting of Scarlett, Mooney, and freshman David Sorenson finished first, second, and third, respectively, in the 100 yard backstroke. Schapp took on the Continentals best overall swimmer, Bowie Sievers, in the 500 yard freestyle and won by nearly six seconds. Highlighting the meet was the dominating relay performance turned in by Schapp, Scarlett, sophomore Billy Breitweiser, and senior Todd Herman with an overall time of 3:14:81, two seconds ahead of the Continentals best relay team.
On the women's side, highlighting a big win against the Continentals, sophomores Priscilla Wright, Erica Fugger, and Lexi Bascom picked up several victories to lead the Dutchwomen to victory. Bascom and Wright teamed up with Andrea Marois and Prendergast to win the 200 yard medley relay by nearly three seconds. Sophomore Kelly Geary and Yergeau finished first and second in the 1650 yard freestyle. Fugger picked up her first victory of the day with a win of less than two tenths in the 200 yard freestyle. Wright continued her day with a win in the 50 yard freestyle, Prendergast finished second. Bascom and junior Annora Brennan finished first and second in the 100 yard backstroke. The relay team consisting of Wright, Fugger, Diana Fletcher, and Suzanne Foley delivered in the final race of the meet to secure the victory for the Dutchwomen, finishing nearly eight seconds ahead of the Continentals best relay team.
In the diving competition, sophomore Ian Drillinger qualified for nationals again and secured two first place victories in the one and three meter competition. Nearpass finished in second place on the one meter competition and finished in first place in the three meter competition.
The Dutchmen and women finish their season with a dual meet at Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM.
