Be calm, gentle reader. This is not a maligned prank by the powers that be at the Dutch Oven offices. Our college does in fact have a track team, albeit petite. This small but determined contingent of athletes traveled to the frozen tundra that is Hamilton, New York to race in the Colgate Class of '32 Invitational. Several undaunted Union athletes went toe-to-toe with the talented field at hand and produced personal best performances on the day.

Veteran coach Dave Riggi summed up the meet most succinctly: "I was a little worried on how the day started on Saturday but the team pulled it together and there were a lot of great performances." The first race of the day, the men's 3000 meters, started half-an-hour before the scheduled race time. Even so, freshman Gabe Sturges held on for 15th place overall with a time of 9:14. The remaining members of the distance contingent also fared well. The distance medley, consisting of Connor Gagliardi, Dearon Panossian, Ethan Loew, and Brian Solinsky ran to 14th place overall. In an individual effort, Panossian won his heat of the 800 meters throwing down a 2:02 and placed 16th overall. In the highest finish of the day, the 4x400 team of Davis Barber, Josh Davis, Kyle Bucklin, and Phil Lambert finish eighth overall running a strong time of 3:32. For the field events, Danton Brewington placed 12th with a heave of 12.06 meters in the shot put competition. In the men's long jump, Kyle Bucklin fared very well; getting out to 5.84 meters good for 9th place overall.

The mile duo of Ramsey Steiner and Jessica Sherrod started the day off well for the women's team. Steiner placed 13th overall with a time of 5:35 while Sherrod ran to 22nd overall stopping the clock at 5:53 with both athletes shattering their previous personal bests. On the shorter side of things, Judy Horan sprinted her way to a 10th place finish in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.60. The indefatigable pair of Steiner and Sherrod came back in the 800 meters running 2:36 and 2:45, respectively. Union stacked the 200 meter race with five Union athletes competing. Judy Horan finished at 29.13, Jessica Singer at 30.36, Kaitlin Camilleri at 31.65, Katelyn Lancto at 32.24, Amy McDermott at 32.95, and Rachel Eastman at 33.15. In the field events, Union had a strong showing by Kaitlin Camilleri, throwing 9.36 meters in the shot put, good for 15th overall. In the high finish of the day, Amy McDermott leapt to a very strong 1.50 meters in the high jump for 8th place overall.

The Union track and field team returns to action this coming Saturday at the Smith College Invitational in Northampton, Massachusetts.
