An open letter from the Liaison Committee for Academic Computing and Technology
Liaison Committee for Academic Computing and Technology
Issue date: 2/4/10 Section: Sci/Tech
Serving on the committee are the Chief Information Officer, a faculty representative from each of the four Divisions, two students, and one representative from Academic Computing, the College Library and Web Resources. The Chief Information Officer and a faculty member co-chair the Committee. The faculty members are elected for staggered three-year terms. The student members are appointed by the Student Committee on Committees.
The Committee meets rather faithfully four times a semester to address an open-ended, wide-ranging and constantly evolving set of issues including:
•email archiving (for purposes of legal e-discovery - a 'hot' topic)
•outsourcing student email (hail Gmail!)
•addressing the problem student printing (providing it while avoiding bankruptcy!)
•maintaining, updating and expanding electronic classrooms
•replacing computer equipment on a regular and equitable basis
•surveying faculty and students about computing problems and needs
•and on (visit the archive of the Committee's minutes @ http://minerva.union.edu/accsc).
You can participate by contacting members of the Committee by weighing in with your ideas, suggestions and concerns regarding policy. The current members of the Committee are:
•David Cossey, Chief Information Officer and co-chair
•Felmon Davis, Associate Professor, Division 1 representative and co-chair
•Ken George, Web Director
•Rebecca Koopmann, Associate Professor, Division 3 representative
•Ajay Major, 2012
•Thomas McFadden, College Librarian
•Mary Parlett-Sweeney, Director of Academic Computing
•Ashok Ramasubramanian, Assistant Professor, Division 4 representative
•Steven Sargent, Professor, Division 2 representative
•Tayyab Shaikh, 2011
So the password issue was resolved in favor of 'convenience' wed with a requirement of 'strong' passwords that need to be changed with a prescribed frequency, a kind of 'golden mean' between security and ease of use. Solomon could not do better! Solomon does not sit on the Committee but almost as good is your participation and input leading to a 'wisdom of the crowd' effect which will benefit and support the work of the College.
Signed:
