The number of both early decision and regular decision applications to Union has soared to an all-time high.

"This is a great sign of the positive momentum Union has in the higher education landscape," said Matt Maletesta, Vice President of Admissions, Financial Aid, and Enrollment. "It was nice to see a small improvement in our application numbers this year, but we are more proud of the quality of the applicants tied with this increase in students picking us as their top choice.

This year the Admissions office received 330 early decision applications, an increase of about 10 percent from last year's number.

Maletesta attributes the increase of early decision and regular decision applicants to the Communications office who have worked hard to improve the college's marketing.

Union's Senior Director of Communications, Jill Hungsburg, and her team have worked diligently to expand the pool of students whom they reach out to, both online and through other various marketing materials. They have focused heavily on encouraging prospective students to visit campus in order to get a taste for the many beneficial aspects that Union has to offer.

Likewise, the new advertisement campaign has broadened its geographic reach to include a larger number of students from outside the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, where most current Union students call home.

"We are working hard to make Union more than a 'best kept secret," he continued.

While the number early decision applicants may be increasing, it doesn't mean that there is no room for those who choose to apply regular decision. In fact, the large majority of students enrolled at college are admitted through the regular decision application process.

This year, the Admissions Office plans to accept 40 percent of the class of 2014 during the early decision process, leaving the remaining 60 percent to be accepted through regular decision.

However, as the economy is still in a fragile state and the unemployment rate is approaching 10 percent, the Admissions Office does have concerns. As families are seeking ways to be more frugal with their spending, it remains a challenge for the Admissions Office to communicate the importance of a Union education, which tends to be quite expensive.

Nevertheless, nearly 4,900 high school seniors are seeking a spot in the incoming freshman class, a number that has increased by 3 percent from a year ago. The figure is just short of the record 5,271 applications received for the class of 2012.

Maleta expects to accept a total of 565 students to the class of 2014. Regular decisions will be sent out by April 1 and accepted students have until May 1 to commit to Union College as their choice of higher institution.
