The Dutchwoman came out hard for the beginning of the first period looking to make a statement after their 3-0 loss to Yale the night before. They began on the front foot creating lots of pressure making it difficult for the Brown defense in the opening stages of the first period. Their pressure paid off as Perri Maduri collected a pass from Jeannie Sabouren and fired a shot from the right circle past Brown goalie Katie Jamieson. Brown almost struck back immediately as they worked the puck around well in the Union zone creating what looked to be an empty net chance for Sophomore forward Allison Wong, who took a shot that for all the world looked like it was going in, but Marcinko made a highlight reel diving save to preserve the shutout.
Brown continued to tighten their grip on the game peppering Marcinko, who was unable to be solved by any of the 20 shots the home side threw at her in the first period, which ended with Union feeling a bit fortunate to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
The second period started in the same fashion that the first period ended, with Brown applying lots of offensive pressure. But as in the first period Union's defense seemed to be able to bend quite a bit without breaking. When Union finally was able to apply some pressure of their own they made the home side pay dearly as a spell of some good offensive zone play concluded when junior forward Marissa Gentile slid the puck to the back post where, sophomore forward Molly Kate Devin put the puck past a helpless Jamieson who could only watch the puck go into the back of the net. Gentile's assist is her second in two games. An evenly contested second period finished without incident, and with a Brown team scratching their heads as they had out shot the Dutchwomen 34-17 yet found them selves trailing 2-0 at the second intermission.
Brown came out for the final period of play looking to salvage something from the game, and threw everything but the kitchen sink into the Union zone. But, as was the underlying theme of the game, whatever tests were given to the Marcinko and the Union defense were passed with flying colors as the Bears were kept at bay. Emelie Arsenault added to her team leading four goals with an empty netter with a little over a minute left to extinguish any chances Brown had at getting back into the game.
Brown may have felt a little hard done by the 3-0 result which in all fairness may have been a bit harsh, but take nothing away from the Dutchwoman, who were able to create chances and more importantly convert them. The lasting memory from this night will surely be Marcinko's performance, stopping all 47 shots she faced. For her performance she has been named the ECAC?Goaltender of the Week.
Next weekend the Dutchwomen travel to Harvard on Friday before ending a four game road trip at Dartmouth.
