The Union College Theater and Dance Department welcomes the RUBBERBANDance Group for their fall Dance Residency.
This groundbreaking troupe fuses the elements of hip hop and ballet to define new movement aesthetics. The RBDG Group is an eclectic collective of dancers with ballet or street dance backgrounds that was founded in 2002. It stretches its boundaries to include theatrical interpretation, improvisation, and film projections. Based in Montreal, the innovative RBDG is directed by Victor Quijada who earned the name "Rubberband" from his elastic hip-hop body. Originally from Los Angeles, choreographer Quijada studied at the County High School for the Arts and danced for Twyla Tharp, Eliot Feld, and the Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal.
The Union residency will include a master class for advanced students on Wednesday, October 21 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. and an open rehearsal on Thursday, October 22 from 6:30-8:00 p.m., scheduled in the Dance Studio (Visual Arts Building). The Dance Residency is made possible by a generous gift from Mrs. Sue and Dr. Gus Davis in memory of their daughter.
RBDG in affiliation with the Egg, Center for the Performing Arts in Albany, will be performing on Friday, October 23 at 8:00p.m. The troupe will present "Loan Sharking," a collection of works through commissions by hip hop and contemporary dance festivals in Canada, Europe, and the United States.
Students, Faculty and Staff may get a free ticket for the RBDG performance at the Yulman Theatre Box Office, Mon-Fri from 12:30 to 1:30p.m., and at the Visual Arts Building Office 101 from 2:30-4:00p.m. starting October 12. Tickets are available on first come first serve basis with a Union ID.
Free transportation by busses to and from the Egg will be available to all those who sign up. Departure will take place on Friday, October 23rd at 7:00p.m. from the Nott/Seward parking lot.
