After living in Schenectady for the past three years, I have to admit that I have grown to love this eccentric city in the Capitol District. Sure, we all have our doubts about residents on bicycles, and we continue to question the city every time our inboxes report a new crime. In all honesty, there may be times when some of us feel down-right unsafe.

Nevertheless, there are aspects of Schenectady that are comfortably familiar. Many students don't get off of campus enough (and some never leave at all), and so I compiled a list of my five favorite things to do in the city.

Check them out and experience all Schenectady has to offer.

Proctors Theater. Growing up outside of New York City, I have always loved the theater. Who would have thought that catching the latest musicals could be so easy? Proctor's is great because it offers great shows at reasonable prices, and it is so close: literally four blocks away!

Chez Daisie. Although my visits here have been limited, I never walk away disappointed. This charming creperie transports all its customers to France with its delicious food and endearing owners. Crepes are available in both savory and sweet flavors and are always satisfying.

Bow Tie Cinema. Personally, I'm a sucker for movie popcorn, so I tend to gravitate toward movie theaters. This theater is especially nice because of the stadium seating, short ticket lines, and available wine. Plus, it's right on State Street!

Gepettos. How could I leave this off the list? I don't even think that a full description is necessary. We all know that G-petts is a great addition to the Union social life.

Pin Head Susan's. Sweet potato fries, awesome burgers, and an extensive beer menu. This has been one of my go-to places since freshman year, and I continually have a great time. Maybe it's just because of the memories I have associated with this restaurant, but for some reason this is one of the first places I think of when describing of Schenectady to my friends at home.

So whether you need a change of surroundings or some great food, check out these places for a guaranteed good time!
