FROM THE OPINON EDITOR'S DESK:
JOHN AND KATE PLUS AN UNCERTAIN FATE
Issue date: 5/28/09 Section: Opinions
In this modern world that we live in, with terror alert levels circulating through the color wheel, our troops taking part in dangerous (and unnecessary) war in foreign lands, and the American family ripping apart at the seams (see: Jon and Kate Gosselin of TLC's Jon and Kate Plus 8) - who would have thought that the scariest thing I would read in the news today is that Amy Winehouse is launching a new clothing line (no explanation necessary)…
Why is it that when I log onto my iGoogle homepage to read about world news that I am burdened by the headlines "Matthew McConaghhey: Baby & the Beach" and "Brooke Shields Gives Marriage Advice". HOW SCANDALOUS! I know that we are living in an age of gossip and TMZ, but honestly, I expect more from the hardworking reporters at Entertainment Tonight who claim these stories to be BREAKING NEWS!
Ordinarily, I would enjoy reading these stories and basking in the drama and turmoil that is the celebrity lifestyle, but for some reason, these articles just seem preposterous. I admit to following the lives of celebrities closely, mostly to keep up on the ever-changing Hollywood relationships and who was seen having lunch at the Ivy with whom.
However, I have to contend that the media frenzy surrounding celebrities has become too extreme. Even now during the reign of Barack Obama, more people are caring about Michelle's fashions than Barack's policies. And while I would be lying if I said that I didn't appreciate such publications as the Chicago Tribune's dedication to Obama Style Watch, I would much rather see time spent discussing health care rather than the Jason Wu dress that Michelle wore to the Inauguration gala (even though it was an absolutely gorgeous dress).
A recent, highly twittered-about topic has been the fame of super parents Jon and Kate Gosselin of Jon and Kate Plus 8. The Gosselin family, famous simply for having A TON of stockings on their mantel during the Christmas season, has been in the public eye and on the covers of People, Life and Style, US Weekly, etc. thanks to allegations brought against Jon which stated that he had been having an affair with a 23 year old teacher and was seen going out to bars late at night with random women.
