Needless to say, a picture is worth a thousand words (and probably thousands of dollars) - but when photos leaked of the pair cozying up in her car, there wasn't a gossip mag out there that wasn't plastering the somber faces of the eight little ones on the cover with the headline "Jon and Kate: 'Its Over!'"
During the start of the controversy, I laughed and rolled my eyes, having never seen an episode of the adorable little Gosselin children. In my mind, it was just another rumor or another excuse for dare I say bitchy Kate to have her name and face out in the pubic eye (also, it all came out around the time of her new book release).
All seemed fishy until the interviews came rolling in. Kate's direct quotes to the Today Show and to People Magazine, all citing uncertainty within her relationship with her husband. Usually when these stories are broken, there is barely a thread of evidence to stand behind and an absence of negative reaction given by the cheater's significant other. However, for the first time, this seemed real. It wasn't just a Lindsey or a Miley or a Jonas who was experiencing relationship problems, it was a real person trying to live their life and raise their kids (albeit, in a fishbowl on television).
But these were real emotions and real circumstances that I, and the rest of America have been watching unfold before our very eyes. It was that moment, when the story broke, that I began to become disgusted with the media attention that stars or even these pseudo-stars receive on a daily basis. Not only are they being stalked by paparazzi, but their stories are also being exploited and their normalcy is being threatened.
This week, I decided to tune in to the season five premiere of Jon and Kate Plus 8. I had read (via TV Guide) which said that Monday night's premiere was not going to provide us with the same Jon and Kate and that America has come to know over the past few years. Instead of the ordinary episodic commentary by Jon and Kate (sitting closely on a love seat), the two were interviewed about the details of the episode separately.
