Thousands of students and guests put on their shades and headed out to West Beach this weekend to celebrate Springfest.
The weekend included annual events such as Lobsterfest, Delta Kappa Epsilon's Fiji Island, Sigma Phi's Rum and Reggae, and live concert performances. This year's concert featured Matt Nathanson, Sean Kingston, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and DJs the Hood Internet, who played in-between acts.
Last fall, the members of the Springfest Committee, Kathleen Ricci '09, Isade Salcedo '11, Pete Schulte '10, and Liz Morgan '11, started brainstorming ideas for artists to come to Springfest. While the event is a student-run production, the committee worked with advisor Matt Milless as well as Kerrie Wolf and Donna Johndrow from Student Activities who oversaw the planning process. They also worked directly with agents, and made sure that student safety was maintained at all times.
"Planning Springfest is definitely a lot of work, and a lot of behind the scenes planning that people don't know about, but it's a lot of fun too. Seeing our hard work pay off by benefiting the campus community was an awesome feeling. Being involved in concerts here has definitely been one of my favorite things about Union and was a unique experience that I was proud to be a part of, and certainly will miss when I graduate," said Russo, who was president of the committee.
The committee went through the tricky process of choosing performers, working with dining services to arrange for the outdoor barbecue to take place, and then working with facilities, campus safety, a security company and a sound/stage/lighting company. The members also worked with an agent to book the artists and organize accommodations for those artists. Lastly, the Committee had to keep an eye on the weather and come up with a backup plan in case of rain and thunder.
In addition to splitting up the duties before the show, the four had different tasks to do throughout the day on Saturday, which included set changes, making sure the artists were ready to perform, and making sure everything went according to plan.
