Despite our eagerness to move forward under a new President, it is fitting that we also remember where we have been. With that in mind, here are my 10 BEST MOVIES OF 2008!!! And in order to make it more concise and convenient for you, the reader, each selection will be done in 25 words or less. Here goes nothing...
#10 - Kung Fu Panda: Jack Black voice-acts his butt off. Beautiful animation and amazing choreography. Plot is both unpredictable and heartwarming. Dreamwork's best since Shrek.
#9 - Religulous: Bill Maher takes step back, lets religious figures of all kinds speak for themselves. Thought-provoking as hell. Important viewing for believers and non-believers alike.
#8 - Iron Man: Talented Robet Downey, Jr., gorgeous Gwenyth Paltrow, well-paced build-up to awesome final fight...this flick made comic book movies fun again. Eat it, Uwe Boll.
#7 - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: Amazing makeup and even better acting by Pitt and Blanchett. Plot was sometimes slow, but its climax made me cry like no other in '08.
#6 - Doubt: The individual performances were stellar; Adams, Hoffman, and especially Streep deserve every award they get. Made you feel trapped in Catholic school all over again.
=#5 - WALL-E: Animated film worthy of Best Picture if I've ever seen one. Body language tells beautiful love story, in midst of environmental message. Pixar's greatest yet.
#4: Frost/Nixon: Compelling buildup to "boxing match" between Sheen's Frost and Langella's Nixon; both were spectacular, and relevance to recent politics not lost on me either.
#3: The Wrestler: Convincing argument for predestination, Mickey Rourke delivers in role he was born to play. Fitting parallel to humanity's struggles with aging and finding meaning.
#2: The Dark Knight: Made summer blockbusters worth consideration as serious films. Best superhero movie EVER. Phenomenal acting and story made it great, Heath Ledger's Joker made it immortal.
#1: Slumdog Millionaire: Will be remembered as a definitive film of the decade. Three-layered storytelling blended into one seamlessly, in fairy tale about finding destined love. Must-see, period.
