Stanford leads Field Hockey to shutout win
Issue date: 11/6/08 Section: Sports
Union College Field Hockey finished their historic regular season this past Sunday at Frank Bailey Field. The weekend was kicked off with a sweet HalloWIN on Friday against New Paltz. Not only was it Halloween, but it was also beloved goaltender and Captain, Liz Stanford's, 21st Birthday and their first home game after a six-game away streak. Needless to say, the team was pumped up going into the game.
Tyler Willey proved her "Big Willey Style" yet again scoring two of the four goals against the Hawks. With just 34 seconds elapsed on the clock, Lizzy Moran connected with Tyler for Ty's first goal of the game. Unfortunately, New Paltz was able to get one in soon after on a messy skirmish in front of the goal. However, Union was not ready to give up there. Speed demon Anne Hanson powered into the circle sending a hard ball to Lizzy Moran who, slammed it in only three minutes after New Paltz's goal. The tempo of the game continued in Union's favor as Union continued to get shots off.
Early in the second half, Kelsey Powers made a twenty-yard run up the left side of the field, tooling defender after defender. She continued her run all the way to the New Paltz goal, only stopping after scoring from about five yard out.
About six minutes later Kelsey, again determined to score, settled on an assist to non-other then Big Willey, who got her 9th goal of the season. The defense played exceptionally well, providing the push up field that led to Union's 15 penalty corners. This win was a historic one since Union Field Hockey hasn't obtained 13 wins since 1988.
The history continued in Sunday's match against Nazareth College. Again, Union had a lot to play for since it was the last regular season game and the senior game. Senior Captains Anne Hanson, and Liz Stanford have grown with this program since their freshman year, going through great times and not so great times. Because of this, along with their lovable personalities, the girls of Union Field Hockey really wanted a big win for their seniors.
