The Dutchmen came into home-opener against the University of Connecticut with a ton of momentum after their winning the Governor's Cup for their first tournament title since 1993. This marked the seventh time the two programs have met, where Union holds a 5-0-1 advantage. In games against this Atlantic Hockey member, Jason Walters '10 leads Union with five points (two goals, three assists) while Co-Captain Lane Caffaro '09 (four assists) and Brendan Milnamow '09 (two goals, two assists) are next on the list with four points.
On Halloween the play of the Dutchmen against the Huskies was a bit spooky. In each game of the Governor's Cup the Dutchmen played terribly in the first period and let up the first goal, but would pick up their intensity and finish the game strong. The game against UConn was a different story for the Dutchmen as they scored two goals within the first five minutes of the game, but would completely shut down and barely hang on to win the game 3-2.
The Dutchmen came out flying in the first and got on the board 3:05 into the game when Kelly Zajac '12 put in a rebound for his second goal of the season. After attempts by Co-Captain Matt Cook '09 and Chris Potts '09, Zajac was right in front of the net by himself to put the puck away. Caffaro would pick up an assist on the play adding to his success against the Huskies.
Just 58 seconds later the Dutchmen extended their lead when Stephane Boileau '11 passed the puck to the right of the net where Adam Presizniuk '11 one-timed the puck past UConn goaltender Beau Erickson.
After the first five minutes it seemed as if the Dutchmen were going to roll over the Huskies with ease, but they lost all momentum when UConn's Sean Erickson scored a little over two minutes after Presizniuk's goal on the power play.
This gave the Huskies the momentum for the rest of the period and the beginning of the second period as they put a flurry of shots on Corey Milan '11.
But, Union put their lead back to two in the latter part of the second period when Boileau scored off of a pass from Walters. Walters dug for the puck in the corner and passed the puck from the right face-off dot to the slot where Boileau was waiting to deposit the puck into the back of the goal for his second point of the game, and second multi-point game of the season. Each Walters and Milnamow continued their successes against UConn as each were given assists on the goal.
