Francis said she "offered the best opportunity, because the anti-hate crime extension, named after Matthew Shepard, is being considered by the federal government. Furthermore, it will remind the campus of the hate crime that occurred on this campus in the fall and last spring."
In addition, Francis wants students to be aware that they may be "unintentionally hurting" people through their speech and wants to remind people that "using words like 'fag' are incredibly derogatory."
Francis looks forward to Davies's visit and wants students to "realize that homophobia is pointless and destructive."
Francis adds, "I am hoping that Erin will be able to influence students to get up and do something-to resist the fear that they may feel about associating with the GBLT community."
As Davies explains, her message is simple: "fagbug is something that has a hopeful message. This one thing happened, and there are people who want to hold you down, but in the bigger picture, there are so many more nice actions that have come out of it."
