Co-editors-in-chief, Matt Smith and Alla Abramov knew the stakes would be high when the story was first brought to their attention.
"We were aware of the ramifications that come with a story about a national figure coming on campus, especially when it involves alcohol at a fraternity party," Smith said. "Alla and I sat down with John [Tomlin] and drew up a gameplan as how to present the story without any slanderous comments about the Congressman's behavior. Needless to say, things worked out pretty well, and the Concordiensis wound up being all over every major news syndicate in the country. It was an honor to be a part of the whole process."
The student newspaper has not received such national attention since 1996, when the Concordiensis revealed that Union's own Professor Linda Patrik was the sister-in-law of Ted Kaczynski, the infamous unibomber. At that time the Concordiensis received solicitations from Time, Good Morning America, and USA Today amongst other major news organizations. Offers of $250 a day were made to the former editors of the Concordiensis to research Patrik and search for photos. Inside Edition phoned as well as visited the Concordiensis office in the hopes that they would reveal information.
