"Beer, women, no more swimming!" was chanted by all the male swimmers in Nottingham High School's pool area on Saturday night at the conclusion of the championship UNYSCSA meet. Indeed the men were ecstatic, finishing their very long season and looking forward to some of the pleasures they had been denied in the last weeks of their seasons. (I wish the boys good luck staying warm since they are now hairless on their heads, legs and arms.) The Union men's swim team finished third overall out of twelve teams with 1051 points. Hartwick College finished first with 1281 points and Alfred University finished second with 1137.5 points.
Standout performances of the weekend came from senior Captain Aaron Phillips, freshman Eric Sullivan, and freshman Kevin Kewin. The 'phenomenal' Phillips won the 200 butterfly in 1:56.58 with ease beating the second place finisher from Ithaca by over a second. Phillips also had solid performances in the 100 butterfly, taking ninth, and in the 500 free, taking fifteenth. Sullivan had an exceptional meet by finishing first in the never-ending 1,650 yard (one mile) swim in around sixteen minutes and making a national 'B' cut. The long distance swimmer also swam the 500 and finished in fifth, and swam in the 200 free and took eleventh. Kewin had an outstanding performance in his first showing of the meet. He won the grueling 400IM and took third in both the 200 IM and 200 backstroke.
Other superior swims came from junior Charles Kinnett, who finished just behind Sullivan in the 1,650 swim for second place in one of the most exciting events of the meet for Union College. He also took second in the 500 free and a fifth place finish in the 400 IM. Senior DJ Hogenkamp, swimming in his last collegiate swim meet, finished third in the 200 free while taking fourth in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Freshman sprinter Julio Vidal was able to take home seventh in the 200 IM, eighth in the 100 butterfly and tenth in the 100 backstroke.
